|Message:||I happened upon Mickey at a gig with Jack Williams, at the original Crossroads club in Savannah GA.
I fell in love that night.
I've not followed the MN story since that night, though I cherish the CD I bought on the occasion. I am devastated to learn Mickey has died, though I'm surprised he survived as long as he did. During the concert he and Jack talked openly about his battle with lung cancer, and Mickey had a cigarette burning throughout.
Sitting nearby during the Crossroads concert was a prominent Savannah architect, Bob Gunn. He was there with his wife and daughter. Bob was absolutely ecstatic to be there, in the presence of Mickey. His enthusiasm infected me. Six months later I read Bob's obituary in the local paper. Mickey survived him by almost a decade. Bob appeared to be in perfect health, yet MN, victim of lung cancer, outlasted him by many years.
As I said, I fell in love that night.
I fell in love with Bob Gunn's zest for life.
I fell in love with Mickey Newbury's music.
And I fell in love with another concert-goer, a lady from Statesboro, there with a date who was obviously not enjoying the show. She and I shared commentary about the genius of MN, all the while her date stared off into space. Our knees touched, I touched her shoulder... we connected on so many levels....
