||At 10:20 this morning Chad called me from Iraq. The facts I presented last night were not quite accurate. Chad's Platoon was engaged in a 3 hour fire fight somewhere in Baghdad. During the first half hour, Chad was struck in the LEFT forearm by shrapnel from a Rocket Propelled Grenade. It exploded 5 meters from him. As a reaction, Chad threw his left forearm in front of his face to sheild it. The fragment then struck the forearm. Had he not had his arm in that position, the shrapnel would have hit him directly in the face. He was wearing a Kevlar Flak Jacket. The Kevlar was riddled with shrapnel. Had he not been wearing that great piece of equipment he would more than likely be dead. I reported that the doctors intended to leave the fragment in his arm from this day forward due to its location. The antibiotics they are currently giving are not working, This means that they will probably operate, tomorrow. It has not been a real great time for us, but maybe some good will come out of it. He might be shipped state side for rehab and that would get him out of harm's way. Again thanks so much for your concerm . It means so very much to Chad and Me.
PS One unexpected benefit. As a recipient of the Purple Heart, Jennifer and Chad's clildren can attend any Indiana College or University absolutely free compliments of the VA!!!!!!
