|Subject:||Johnny Winter - Texas Guitar Slinger has passed|
I first saw him at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1972. I was 16. His covers of Jumpin' Jack Flash and Crossroads were unsurpassed. He out-Clapton'ed Clapton. Listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn, I have no doubt who one of his mentors was. I saw him there 3 times with just him and his band.
I joined the Navy in 1975. I was fortunate enough to see him and his brother Edgar play together in San Diego.
Fast forward to 4 years ago...
I took both of my sons to see this guitar legend in a small venue in Houston across US59 from Minute Maid Park. He had to be helped across the stage as he shuffled to the chair. He played the entire set sitting down with his eyes closed, as they always were.
I will miss this Texas Guitar Slinger. Another chapter is closed. My best friend is a close friend of Edgar. I respect the family's wishes for privacy. This is truly a sad time...for them and all of us.
Johnny Winter...there will never be another. "The whitest man that ever played the blues."
