The melody is an old classic tune from Mexico. Kelly Joe Phelps also played this as an instrumental on one of his albums. I will have to listen further for the other correlation. Good ear!
Funny how artist, and Mickey was no different, when it came to not wanting to be influenced by other music but sometimes cannot help it. Like they say, "There is nothing new under the sun."
If you listen closely to Mickey's "Westphalia Waltz", it starts off with the same EXACT same notes as Ernest Tubb's, "Rainbow at Midnight". I am quite certain that it was unintentional but his mother Mamie listened to Ernest Tubb quite a bit when Mickey was a youngster. As a matter of fact, the first song that Mickey knew was one by Ernest Tubb.
Gatemouth Brown would only listen to his own music when he was home to not be influenced by anyone else. He came up with a great song entitled, "Breaux Bridge Rag". Very well done! Ironically, it is to the same tune as "Louisiana Saturday Night", and that was NOT done on purpose!
As many extremes that songwriters go through to NOT be influenced by others, it just can't be helped. Mickey's children will tell you what extremes he would go through to not be influenced.
Genius??? Yes, there is! Absolutely! Sing "Sweet Memories" some time at about 4 or 5 times the speed and reply back with what melody you come up with...
