In the early 80's Mickey, Rodney, Jerry Jeff and Billy Joe did one of those songwriter things at the Granada Theater in Dallas. Mickey would be singing and the rest of the guys would be playing a game of musical chairs behind him, trying not to be the one who always had to follow him. Billy Joe kept claiming that he had first right or refusal because of his handicap...two missing fingers.
When the golf tourney was in Austin, it seemed that we all would wind up at Coach's house. As you might think, it's a very nice house...but Coach had one unbreakable rule...when anyone was singing there would be no talking, no moving around, no going to the bathroom...you listened. I will always believe that Mick, on purpose, would string four or five songs together...no break at all for thirty minutes...just to watch everyone who had been drinking beer all day sit, sweat and squrm.
The only person I ever saw who wasn't afraid to follow him was Jimmy Day...but then nobody ever wanted to follow Day either. Come to think of it, if all I ever could listen too was Mickey and Jimmy, I would be a happy camper.
