Subject:  Mickey was Matraca Berg's Hero
Message:  From the June 2006 Edition of American Songwriter
are some extracts from an article about Matraca Berg - The fabulous songwriter who wrote tons of hits for artists like Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Martina, Pam Tillis (to name a few)...and in particular, the great song 'Strawberry Wine,'which was song of the year 1997.

From the article:

Matraca writes, "My mom hung out with people like Sonny Throckmorton and Red Lane. Red used to put nursery rhymes to music and play them for me at the kitchen table, He'd make up the melodies as he went. Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury, Bobby Gentry...I knew them all as I was growning up. They were my heroes. I wanted to be them."

Their songs captured her imagination. "I could sing Mickey's 'Sweet Memories' when I was in kindergarten," she says. "'Ode to Billy Joe' was a big one to me, 'Sunday Moring Coming Down'...but 'Yesterday' was the first song that made me cry, even though I was too little to know why."

The complete article is too long to post here, but She knew Mickey, and I'll bet she has some good stories we haven't heard... so I may attempt to contact her about the gathering in 07.

It was great seeing so many of you at the Frank Brown Festival this year.

Yours in music,

Larry and Gale
