For me, it's her voice. The essence of it.
Specifically, it's her voice when she doesn't
over-sing, i.e. when she stays within herself.
Fields Of Gold and Songbird are two examples
where she never leaves the song behind.
On Over The Rainbow, a song with a wonderfully
subversive story behind it, to my ears she
overdoes her vocal a little. Jonmark, I'd put
interpretations right up there, too. If you've
ever heard Mike Beck's version of Bob Dylan's
I Want You, it's transformative. Anybody ever
hear Steve Young do Lawdy Miss Clawdy? It's a
different song than the one Lloyd Price did.
Christy Moore's recent cover of Joni Mitchell's
Magdalene Laundries sends a shiver up my spine,
as does his cover version of Natalie Merchant's
Motherland. Songs are holy, as a friend often tells me. Both Eva and Mickey treated them so.
