"Out on this long stretch of Interstate 10
That 'ol Del Rio station just keeps rollin' right in
Many the night it was my only friend
Just me and the radio..."

If I want to be alone with Mickey for a moment,
those lines always seem to turn the trick.

The Silver Moon Cafe was once out this way
Like route 66,boys,it too had it's day,and this rusty old sign here
is all that remains,
My how the times have changed.

[I can just picture Mickey driving through those lonely nights, reminiscing about the old silver moon cafe that is no longer there,as he looks forward to arriving home to Susan and the youngins']

tugs at the heartstrings...hey?

That song is so big, big as the land it covers. Each time
that I listen to it, I hear something else, or hear what
I've heard before in a new way. And I find myself shifting
between the double consciousness in the song, being with
the younger Mickey at the wheel of the car as it drives
across that open country, and then being with the older
man as he recreates the journey from memory at his home
in Oregon. A lot of songs come from a spark born of the
friction between experience and imagination, and you are
not always aware which is which, even if you have studied
what is available about the artist, even if you are a friend
of the songwriter. It was interesting to me, for example,
to read about the real-life Suzanne that Leonard Cohen wrote
of in his song, to learn that, indeed, she welcomed him to
her apartment overlooking the St. Lawrence River, that she
made tea for him with mandarin oranges, that she used to
make clothes from recycled cloth that she bought at the
Salvation Army thrift store. So, much of the song is from
experience, and then there is the more imaginary - or in
this case, envisioned - aspect, where Cohen juxtaposes the
romantic and the spiritual by inserting the parallel middle
verse to the story about Jesus being a sailor. In Mickey's
song, though he was a long way from his death still, there
is such a strong sense of him confronting his own mortality.
At least I feel it that way. As if he is both the solitary
figure at the wheel of the car listening to the radio, and
also "the sailor", watching over the journey from his place
in Springfield, already knowing how the story ends...

"Glory glory hal..le..lujah"
"Glory glory hal..le..lujah"
"Glory glory hal..le..lu..oo..jah"
"His truth is marching on"

I love playing American Trilogy LOUD

with Mickey singing his heart out.
Now if that doesn't stir you, then
nothing will.

Dave,

And that Interlude for the Trilogy. I know what you mean about turning the volumne LOUD. Just the musical notes send shivers ...

You could have a CD on just his scores. Ever get lost in "Dancing Shadows?"

Yes Joey, 'lost' is a wonderful expression.
Mickey's voice, even late in his career, still had that special sound.
It could still melt your heart and caress your soul.

...I love to hear him hold each note, right to the very end.
...magic.

Leave this precious moment to the child behind your eyes
let him touch the things he lost along the way

I believe that in His wisdom God set aside this time
just to let us all go home to yesterday

Bill.. I think of all Mickey's lyrics, these may be my favorite. Especially with his voice, melody, delivery and what those four lines say..

This one's been in the archives too long.
Time for another look. And, maybe even
more input.

This is a good thread isn't it, Dave...

Let's keep it going. There are still some songs left that we haven't covered.

Walk me through the blindin' snow
Take me where the sun won't go
Shallow waters never flow
Slowly to the sea

Walk me through the dry hot sand
Steal my cup but fill my hand
Leave me where the valley can
Rock my soul back to sleep

Where the mighty winds lie still
Ever silence on the hill
Cradled by the mountain til
The Father welcomes me

And lay me down in the verdent green
At the breast of the mother spring
With a song that I can sing
One that I can keep
Let me sleep

My itís been a long long time
Funny things I have treasured in my mind
Are like the closiní of a door
It donít matter anymore

All the friends I thought I knew
They dwindle down now to a precious few
Feel like an aging L.A. whore
It donít matter anymore

Takiní it in watchiní a willow freely
Bend in the wind turning so ever slowly
Into the end honey donít no one know me
Not the way you do

Oh itís been a long long time
Funny thing how you could always read my mind
Turn out the lights and close the door
It donít matter anymore

I came to hear the music...
And to love all that came as well.
We've lost something along the way,
We don't have much to say...
For now.

The magic is here...if we look for it.
It doesn't take much effort.
Just look inside.
It is still there,
In us.

I want someone I can call when I'm alone
Someone by my side when things go wrong
Someone to stand by me no matter what I do
Just as long as that someone is you

Well at times I feel I need the rain
At time's I need the sun
Pleasure is a thread of pain
When it is undone

My moments of insanity
Are never like a chain
I only know I am not free
The nights when I am sane

So do not be concerned my love
If you see me cry
For the laughter does not
Choose to free
The happiness inside

Just as there may seem to be
A smile that's out of place
It only means there is a pain
That hurts too much to face

Oh the road it sure got rough, Lord, where I've been,
So many times I thought I'd just call it a day,
But there's nothing when it's over but the end,
So I guess I gotta' find a better way.
