Message:
Mick loved hearing new songs that were well written, and Marty Hall spoke of a prominent example. “Over the years I found several well written songs to share with him, and his reactions were always insightful and valuable to me as a songwriter. One day I brought Mickey a song I believed to be particularly affecting. It is “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton” performed by Nickel Creek. The music was written by one of the members of the group, and the words were written by Robert Burns. I had no idea who Robert Burns was, but I was sure of one thing: he was a great wordsmith.”

“When I sent the tune to Mickey, he really enjoyed all aspects of it. This song was quite an artistic achievement, as it was elegantly simple in its production and performance as it was in its composition. Mickey explained to me that Burns was a famous 18th Century Scottish poet. Then Mickey confided in me that many years ago in Nashville, Kris Kristofferson had told Mickey that he was ‘an American Robert Burns.’ Mickey had to do some quick research to understand the dimension of Kris' compliment. But not until Mickey heard this beautiful Burns poem put to music did the full impact of Kris' compliment hit home. Mickey told me he wanted to make sure to tell Kris the story, but I never heard him doing so.”
