The Enduring Patchwork of 1044 Covers

The Genres
From the genius of Ray Charles to the metal of Manowar, hundreds upon hundreds of artists have taken Mickey Newbury’s art to heart.  Why is his music so engaging?  “I always wanted to sing to my audience rather than down to them,” he explained.  “I just believed it was easier to influence people through their hearts rather than intellectually.”

His recipe works. Since 1965, some 1058 covers have been served up by artists from all walks of life. At current count, 807 artists have taken 122 Newbury compositions across many borders, delivering the works as pop, folk, funk, jazz, rock, soul, steel, blues, disco, polka, gospel, reggae, country, bluegrass, R&B, big band, western swing, children’s music and easy listening. Also weighing in esoterically are cuts in the Celtic domain, as well as opera, barbershop, pipe organ, marching band and ballroom dancing (waltz and rumba). Hard rockers have been Newbury’d too, delivering Mick’s material as punk, metal and psychedelia.

Clearly, it is not possible to pen Newbury in a single corral, such as folk or country. The man spun his delicacies for many artists of different styles. “At one time,” he recalled, “I had four songs on the charts, one each in a different chart.” The songs simultaneously held top positions with styles as disparate as “Sweet Memories” (Easy Listening #1) by Andy Williams, “Time Is A Thief” (R&B #1) by Solomon Burke, “Here Comes The Rain Baby” (Country #1) by Eddy Arnold, and “Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In” (Pop/Rock #5) by The First Edition.

By any measure, endorsement by such a collection of artists is more than noteworthy. It is extraordinary.

The Roots
When asked about the accomplishment, Mick said, “So here’s what happened. Growing up in country music, being subjected to the blues for that short period when I was a teenager, and then the rock era. You go through that, man, and you got an education that kind of... well, there has to be a product that comes out of it that’s a combination of the three.”

Though his unassuming nature is commendable, Mickey Newbury can be summarily described as a sophisticated country boy. William Hedgepeth expanded on the topic in a Look magazine article, writing, “Mickey’s physical concession to countrydom is that he wears cowboy boots and has ‘Mom&Dad’ tattooed on his arm. Otherwise, he is mildly long of hair, uses a classic-style guitar and punctuates his thoughts with ‘man.’” This helps to explain why popular TV host Ralph Emery referred to Newbury as the first “hippie cowboy.” And why silver-tongued Kris Kristofferson called him, “One of the most confoundingly complex bundles of contradictions walking the streets today.”

Writer Dave McElfresh brings the subject down to earth with an earthy proclamation: “Newbury is, in a number of ways, far from representing the typical Southern music writer. He plays a gut string classical guitar, has tonsils so pure and powerful he could probably sing opera, and writes songs so delicate they radically stretch country’s s---kickin’ honky-tonk persona in the opposite direction.”

To cut a long story short, Newbury combined a deep love of writing poetry with a diverse musical background gleaned in Dixie and England.

The Songs
Approximately twenty Newbury compositions have spawned three-fourths of all Newbury covers. Though Mick would make fun of the term, his “Top 19” follows, and we begin with a song that is larger than life.

Can you imagine combining Civil War era songs of the North, South and African-American slaves into one unified movement? On a starry evening in May of 1970 while appearing on stage at the Bitter End West, Newbury did just that. The impromptu arrangement just came together on that magical night and in one moment of brilliant inspiration. Since then, “An American Trilogy” has become his most interpreted piece with 328 versions, ranging from Meatloaf to the London Symphony Orchestra to Elvis Presley’s grand finale - eagle cape and all. Consisting of “Dixie” slowed to a quarter-time ballad (I wish I was in the land of cotton), “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (Glory glory hallelujah) and “All My Trials" (So hush little baby / Don’t you cry / You know your daddy’s bound to die), the “Trilogy” bonds minority, Southern and Northern issues into a common lament. The song, Brian Hinton wrote, has become “the ultimate example of Americana. It somehow evokes the birth of modern America.” Actually, the movement has grown. The prayer-song has become a staple in the repertoire of church groups and male voice choirs the world over.

Next in line comes the toe-tappin’ bluegrass standard, “Why You Been Gone So Long,” recorded by 108 artists, including Phish, Carl Perkins and Gene Parsons of Byrds fame. Mickey’s friend, Johnny Darrell was first to cut this fun run through the Smokies, performing the tune as semi rock.

A popular ballroom waltz and frequent choice of karaoke crooners, “Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings,” follows with 75 melodic reading by artists such as Vicki Carr, Englebert Humperdinck and Aydin Esen – a jazz pianist from Turkey. Newbury’s earliest hit (early 1966), “FFFF” was first released by Don Gibson and then by Tom Jones. The song won three BMI awards for Mickey, and his writing career was off and running.

The poignant ballad “Sweet Memories” joins the party with at least 56 interpretations by a wide range of performers including Etta James, the Everly Brothers and six duet teams. Several artists have enjoyed hits with “Sweet Memories,” including Dottie West, Andy Williams and Willie Nelson.

Classic country is well represented by a flowing tearjerker, “She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye.” With insightful lyrics (It’s not her heart, Lord, it’s her mind) fused to haunting melody, the story-song is one of country’s best. From Del Shannon to Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, 42 artists have recorded it. “The Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis scored a Number Two Country hit with “She Even…”

At the opposite end of the musical spectrum, the psychedelic ditty “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” has been delivered by 27 performers, including post-punk protagonist, Nick Cave and world-class accordionist, Myron Floren (of Lawrence Welk fame). In 1968, the song - a warning of the danger in using LSD - launched Kenny Rogers’ career into the outer stratosphere.

A happy, honky-tonkin’ romp, “How I Love Them Old Songs,” rolls on next. The song has been waxed by a diverse lot of 27 warblers, including Broadway’s Carol Channing and British iconic rocker, Gene Vincent.

Several additional Newbury classics have been covered 10 or more times, and a sampling of the artists who have recorded them is listed below:

* 18 - San Francisco Mabel Joy - John Denver, John Laws
* 16 - Remember The Good - Claudine Longet, Glenn Yarbrough
* 14 - I Don’t Think About Her No More - Don Williams, Tammy Wynette
* 14 - Mobile Blue - David Wagner (of Crow), Iain Matthews (of Plainsong)
* 14 - Sunshine - Juice Newton, Gene Pitney
* 13 - Frisco Depot - Robert Forster, Meredith Miller Band
* 13 - Good Morning Dear - Pat Boone, Tennessee Ernie Ford
* 13 - Lovers - Olivia Newton-John, Cliff Richard
* 10 - 33rd of August - David Allan Coe, Gordon Lightfoot
* 10 - Here Comes The Rain, Baby - Sammi Smith, Jerry Wallace

Two songs - Mister, Can’t You See and Wish I Was (aka Willow Tree) - have been covered 9 times. Over 100 additional Newbury compositions have been recorded by a montage of artists throughout the world.

The Artists
During the 60’s and 70’s, many of America’s most revered artists saluted Newbury by recording a number of his songs. Don Gibson, Acuff-Rose writer extraordinaire (“Oh Lonesome Me” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You”), covered 12 Newbury compositions. And in their characteristic styles, music legends Waylon Jennings and Roy Orbison honored their pal by recording 9 of his songs. (It is intriguing that “The Big O” recorded 9 Newbury songs, yet released only 4.)

Sue Thompson (with 8), Kenny Rogers (7) and Sammi Smith (7) also drew from the Newbury well frequently. And so did Tom Jones, Joan Baez, Johnny Rodriguez and Roy Acuff Jr… each visited the reservoir six times.

In number of Newbury songs covered, the above artists are followed by:

* 5 - Thom Fricker, Frank Ifield, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Woody
* 4 - Johnny Darrell, Mickey Gilley, Brenda Lee, Pat Newbury, Buffy St. Marie, Willie Nelson, Dottie West
* 3 - Stephen Ackles, Eddy Arnold, Glenn Barber, Brook Benton, Box Tops, Jim Ed Brown, Anita Carter, Ray Charles, Don Cherry, David Allan Coe, Jimmy Elledge, Kyle Esplin, Euson, Chris Fraser, Jack Greene, Clay Hart, BB King, Kingston Trio, Al Murphy, Neal Ford, Wayne Newton, Johnny Tillitson.

Hundreds of additional artists have covered one or two Newbury songs, everybody from Perry Como to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The covers, it seems, are spread everywhere.

The Tributes
The art is as compelling today as yesterday, as demonstrated by the recent release of 5 Newbury tribute albums and a music video. Peter Blackstock and Chris Eckman, editors of the top-notch No Depression magazine, produced the first tribute to Mickey in 2000, titled “Frisco Mabel Joy Revisited.” As an alternative country ensemble, contemporary versions of songs from Newbury’s classic 1970 LP are performed by artists such as Bill Frisell, Midnight Choir, Walkabouts, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet and The Hole Dozen. The CD ends on an unexpected note as Kris Kristofferson performs “San Francisco Mabel Joy.”

Cowboy Johnson, an ex rodeo rider from Texas, was next out of the chute in early 2004 with “A Grain of Sand,” a tribute album containing 12 covers. Mickey’s good friend Jonmark Stone recorded a dozen of the piper’s tunes too, ten with violin virtuoso Marie Rhines on their 2005 CD, “When I Heard Newbury Sing.”

Who has recorded the most Newbury songs? Mickey’s multitalented friend Toni Jolene Clay covered 15 of his tracks, 11 on her 2005 dedication, “Amen For Old Friends.” Toni’s album contains a rare treat: two duets with Mickey (on the title track and “How’s The Weather”).

Nashville’s Kacey Jones has recorded 15 Newbury songs too, all on her 2006 album, “Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury.” The CD was released with a music video of her singing “San Francisco Mabel Joy.” Produced by songwriter Stacy Dean Campbell, the black and white production stars Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Payne and Mickey’s youngest daughter, Laura Shayne Newbury Hunsacker.

The Reverence Praise from one’s contemporaries is precious validation. In Newbury’s case, as a writer’s writer, he is highly praised by the crème de la crème:

* John Prine: “Mickey Newbury is probably the best songwriter ever.”

* Sam Phillips of Sun Records: “One of the greatest songwriters and performers… a rare talent.”

* Willie Nelson: “He was one of the best writers we’ve ever had and one of the best friends I’ve ever had.”

* Waylon Jennings: “If you don’t like to hear Mickey Newbury, you’re not American.” (Waylon also spoke of “Hank Williams’ pain songs and Newbury’s train songs…”)

* Johnny Cash (Newbury’s neighbor on Nashville’s Old Hickory Lake): Refered to him as a “poet,” and in 1971 on national TV, Johnny introduced him as “ one of the finest writers in the country.”

* Larry Gatlin : “In 1971, Dottie West told me I looked enough like Mickey that I had to be able to write songs. I might have looked like him, but I sure couldn’t write like him. He was one of a kind.”

* Kris Kristofferson: “God, I learned more about songwriting from Mickey than I did any other single human being. To me he was a songbird. He comes out with amazing words and music... I’m sure that I never would have written Bobby McGee, Sunday Morning Coming Down... if I had never known Mickey. He was my hero and still is.”

Fittingly, Newbury was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame on October 12, 1980. The honor was well deserved as confirmed by the standing ovation he received from fellow artists

The Countries
Covers have surfaced all over America and on all continents except Antartica, though this discographer would bet that someone on that frozen tundra has waxed Newbury. His songs have been recorded in France, Spain, Wales, China, Japan, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, Denmark, Finland, England, Belgium, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Canada, Germany, Jamaica, Australia, Philippines, Romania, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, South Africa and The Netherlands (in Dutch and Drents).

So What?
IIn view of the great number of diverse artists who love and record Mickey’s material, it seems birds of a different feather can flock together. Moreover, Mickey’s music, a beautiful union of melody and lyric, will persevere. Beyond our dreams, his songs will endure.
